What Inspired The Weight of Light Series?

So what first drew me to write The Weight of Light?

I have always been a spiritual person. I love science, philosophy, psychology, and the creative arts. I’ve always been one to look up at the night sky and ponder the meaning of life.

The theme of Near Death Experiences in the TWOL series

I have never personally experienced an NDE. But many years ago, someone very close to me did. During the miraculous months that followed, the changes were prolific—for everyone. It was traumatic, yes—but the physical implications were only a small part of something much deeper: a transformation in their demeanor, their personality, even their energetic presence. It was noticeable… sometimes challenging, and always fascinating.

I began to research NDEs. I studied the science, the physiology, the psychology, and the metaphysical and spiritual components. Over the years, I’ve talked to so many others who have had NDEs. I’ve heard so many inspiring stories. Some beautiful. Some heart wrenching.

But… one thing I noticed is that while many survivors struggle to articulate their experience, there seems to be a universal truth. They are changed. And these changes don’t just impact the survivors; they influence all those who know and love them.

The psychological effects of NDEs ripple through families. Friends. Sometimes, those of us who have experienced NDEs through association attempt to understand the unexplainable.

And so, I was inspired to examine NDEs through the lens of “the other person.”

Why fiction—and not memoir?

Some may wonder why I didn’t choose to write a memoir, or a nonfiction piece that explores this topic.  I made my decision so that I could incorporate more of what I’ve learned, both from my own experiences and from talking to others. There are so many layers to this phenomenon. Psychophysiological effects. Spiritual awakenings. The list goes on. I want to explore them all.

This is a fiction series that is rooted in science, authentic life experience, and truth.

I hope this story is a conversation starter. A thought provoker. A way to inspire deeper conversations—not just about NDEs, but about the bigger picture.

What does it mean to be human?

I do not intend to hyper-focus on the nuances of individual experience, but I’d love to open a broader discussion about our collective exploration and acceptance of our energetic existence.

At its heart, what is The Weight of Light really about?

The series uses a fictional world to examine real-life experiences—pain, loss, love, hope, fear, and how our perceptions of these experiences help shape our journey here on earth as spiritual beings in human form.

At its core, the series chronicles the life of Via—she’s driven, logical, and loyal, often struggling with anxiety, and always questioning everything. It is an adult coming-of-age story that follows Via through her personal journey of awakening.

I realize experiences differ vastly. Everyone’s spiritual growth journey is unique. But there is value in discussion.

This is a place where science meets spirit. It’s a story of the human experience: love, commitment, trauma, grief, and most of all… resilience.

Each book in the series will push the boundaries further. Explore a little deeper…

I hope you will join me.

If this resonates with you—if you’ve ever wondered what lies between what we can explain and what we can feel—then I’d love for you to join me on this journey. The Weight of Light isn’t just a story. It’s a reflection of what connects us all.
